No matter how long you've been driving, the Annapolis, MD roads can sometimes be unpredictable and potentially dangerous. That's why Toyota has created Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), an available safety feature that will become standard in almost every trim level beginning in 2018.
Two packages of TSS will be offered, depending on vehicle size. TSS-C will serve compact vehicles, and TSS-P will be available for midsize and large vehicles and is the most advanced package.
TSS's cutting edge safety technology combines an
in-vehicle camera and a millimeter-wave radar mounted on the front grille to
power the three featured safety technologies available in both packages: the Pre-Collision
System with Pedestrian function, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
function, and Automatic High Beams. A fourth feature is included in
the TSS-P package: Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian function (PCS w/PD) uses the in-vehicle camera and front-grille mounted millimeter-wave radar to detect obstacles in your path and prevent potential collisions. If a vehicle or pedestrian is detected, the PCS w/PD will use audio and visual alarms to alert you to apply the brakes. The Brake Assist system will automatically begin braking the car, to supplement your own braking abilities.
The Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist function (LDA w/SA) analyzes lane markers on the road, and will alert you with audio and visual alarms if you begin to drift into another lane. The Steering Assist function will also offer small corrective steering maneuvers. The drive is better with an extra set of eyes.
The Automatic High Beams (AHB) function can detect oncoming vehicle headlights, as well as the taillights of vehicles in front of you, and will automatically switch between high and low beams.
And finally, with the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) function, you can set your speed, as well as the distance you want to maintain behind the vehicle you are following. As the vehicle in front of you slows down, your DRCC can decelerate your own car to maintain the set following distance. As the vehicle in front you speeds up, your DRCC will accelerate your vehicle until the set speed is reached.
Sounds incredible, right? You're not the only one who thinks so. TSS-P was awarded the New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA) Yankee Cup Technology Award for making the driving experience that much safer.
