2021 Toyota Highlander
The three-row Toyota Highlander has room for up to eight, and it carries all its passengers in style. For 2021, Toyota added the XSE trim to the lineup with an aggressive exterior style. Other trims receive LED projection headlights as a standard feature, and all trims have some new driver-assist features, including a semi-automated steering system that works in emergencies. Trim Levels (Exterior)
The entry-level Highlander L comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, heated side door mirrors with integrated turn signals, LED taillights, and LED projector headlights. The LE adds a power liftgate and LED fog lights, while the XLE has a power moonroof and roof rails. Step up to the new XSE for a sport-tuned suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips, black exterior trim elements, and light strip-style daytime running lights. The Limited is up next with 20-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights, a hands-free power liftgate, and high-output LED fog lights, while the top-level Platinum adds self-leveling LED headlights and a panoramic sunroof.
Engine (Power)
Every non-hybrid Highlander comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 gas engine that generates 295 horsepower. It works with Toyota's eight-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with front-wheel drive. An all-wheel-drive system is available as an option for any model.
Performance
The V-6 easily propels the Highlander around town and gets it up to highway speed quickly and smoothly. The suspension provides a smooth ride over uneven pavement and keeps this SUV feeling connected to the road when taking tight corners. The all-wheel drive can send up to 50% of the engine's power to the rear wheels when it senses slip, and the higher-end trims have a more sophisticated system that can split power again between the rear wheels.
Interior
The standard configuration for the Highlander seats eight. Second-row captain's chairs are an option that reduces seating to seven. An eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat comes standard, along with cloth upholstery. The XLE gets simulated leather and heated front seats, with genuine leather in the Limited and Platinum. These trims also add ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, and a heated steering wheel. An 8-inch touch screen comes in the L, which also has two 12-volt outlets, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a six-speaker stereo, satellite radio, and four USB ports. The Limited upgrades to an 11-speaker JBL stereo and adds a 120-volt power outlet, and this trim offers the option for a 12.3-inch touch-screen display for the infotainment system. The Platinum makes the larger screen standard.
Safety Features
Every 2021 Highlander comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5.This group of driver aids includes a frontal collision warning and mitigation system, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam headlights, a traffic sign reader, lane-tracing assist, a rear-seat reminder, pedestrian detection, and a rearview camera. The LE and up add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and the Limited adds front and rear parking sensors. Step up to the Platinum for adaptive headlights, automatic windshield wipers, and a head-up display. A digital rearview mirror is another added feature for the Platinum, which also has a surround-view camera system.
