2021 Toyota Corolla
The Toyota Corolla is a well-equipped compact that comes as either a sedan or a four-door hatchback. Both body styles have a full suite of driver safety aids and a wide selection of trims. For 2021, the Corolla has a new Special Edition model with an exclusive body kit. Also new for 2021, the hatchback adds rear-seat-mounted air bags, and the sedan adds a new Apex Edition model with a sporty chassis, summer tires, and a manual transmission. Trim Levels (Exterior)
The L is the entry-level Corolla. It comes with 15-inch steel wheels, LED headlights, taillights, and LED daytime running lights, along with a black mesh grille. The LE adds 16-inch steel wheels and heated side door mirrors, while the XLE adds upgraded LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, and keyless entry. Step up to the SE for 18-inch alloy wheels, sporty exterior trim elements, integrated turn signals for the side mirrors, and dual exhaust outlets. The SE Nightshade has black-painted wheels, black badging, and a black rear spoiler. The new SE Apex comes with18-inch wheels, black or bronze exterior trim, lower rocker sills, and larger exhaust tips. A bump up to the XLE gets you upgraded LED headlights and a sunroof, while the XSE adds 18-inch wheels. The Apex also comes as the Apex XSE with a stiffer suspension, a rear spoiler, and upgraded exterior trim elements.
Engine (Power)
Toyota offers the Corolla with two different engines. The base is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine with 139 horsepower. All hatchback models and the SE, XSE, and Apex sedans get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that puts out 169 horsepower and works a CVT.
Performance
The Corolla's standard engine has plenty of power for driving around town, and the 2.0-liter has some extra pep to get you up to highway speeds a little quicker. The ride in this small car is comfortable, and it has a light steering system and strong brakes.
Interior
There's room for five in the Corolla with comfortable seats in both rows. Cloth upholstery comes standard, along with a 60/40-split rear seat. The SE adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel and premium sport seats, and the XLE and up have Toyota's SofTex faux leather upholstery and heated front seats. Every Corolla has a 7- or 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and for 2021 it now comes with Android Auto. You'll also get a 12-volt power outlet, a USB port, a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, and the higher trims add wireless charging. Navigation is available depending on the trim, and Toyota offers an upgraded nine-speaker JBL stereo system and HD radio.
Safety Features
Every Corolla comes standard with advanced safety systems such as forward collision warning with mitigation, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. You'll also get lane tracing assist, pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam headlights, and a rearview camera. Some optional safety features include a blind-spot monitor, adaptive headlights, and rear cross-traffic alert.
