2021 Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius continues to impress with its fuel efficiency and available AWD-e system. It was one of the first hybrid vehicles to hit the road, and it is still one of the most efficient. The 2021 carries over with some minor changes, but it's mostly unchanged. Some updates include adding Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 to replace the standard Toyota Safety Sense system, and you'll get Android Auto as a standard tech feature for every trim except the Limited. Trim Levels (Exterior)
The entry-level Prius L Eco has 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated side door mirrors, and proximity entry. Step up to the LE for a rear window wiper or to the LE AWD-e for fog lights and unique wheel covers. The XLE comes with 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, and windshield wipers, while the 2020 Edition has black exterior trim elements, a rear spoiler, blacked-out headlights, and black 17-inch wheels. At the top of the Prius lineup, the Limited comes with the features of the lower trims and upgrades in the cabin.
Toyota offers a sunroof and 15-inch wheels as an option for the XLE and Limited.
Engine (Power)
The hybrid system that powers the Prius consists of a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine and two electric motors. These combine to put out 121 horsepower. The models with two electric motors have front-wheel drive, and if you choose an AWD-e model, it adds an extra electric motor for the rear wheels.
Performance
The Prius provides a comfortable ride. It makes an excellent commuter vehicle because of its gas-sipping powertrain, and it's easy to drive. Toyota gave it a Power setting that will maximize the gas and electric powertrain to give it more acceleration power. Transitions between the gas and electric power are seamless to the driver, and the AWD-e models get you some extra traction when needed.
Interior
There's room for five in the Prius, with comfortable and supportive seats in both rows. Standard cabin features include a height-adjustable driver's seat, push-button start, cloth upholstery, and a 60/40-split rear seat. A power-adjustable driver's seat comes in the XLE, which also has SofTex vinyl upholstery. A 7-inch touch screen comes standard, and you'll also get satellite radio, three USB ports, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto. The XLE has a wireless charging pad, and the Limited adds an 11.6-inch touch screen that sits vertically in the dash that comes with integrated navigation and satellite radio.
Safety Features
Every Prius comes with a full suite of safety systems. The Safety Sense 2.0 group has a forward-collision warning system with bicyclist detection, pedestrian detection, and automatic braking. It also has lane-keeping assist, automatic high beams, radar cruise control, lane-departure warning, and a rearview camera. All models except the L Eco also come with a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert. Stepping up to the midrange XLE gets you rain-sensing windshield wipers and offers the option for a head-up display and adaptive headlights, and the high-end Limited comes standard with the head-up display.
