2022 Toyota 4Runner
The Toyota 4Runner remains a rugged, capable SUV ready to take on any terrain. For the 2022 model year, it gains a new TRD Sport trim level, and all models now come standard with LED high beams. The 2022 4Runner also adds some new safety technology for all trim levels and makes them standard across the board. Here's a closer look at the 2022 Toyota 4Runner.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The long list of 4Runner trims starts with the SR5. It has 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, and roof rails. It also comes standard with skid plates. The Trail Special Edition adds a Yakima roof rack and dark exterior trim elements, while the new TRD Sport adds a hood scoop and an off-road suspension. Step up to the SR5 Premium for the option to add a sunroof, or choose the TRD Off-Road or TRD Off-Road Premium for a locking rear differential. It also has the option for Toyota's Kinetic Dynamic Suspension.
The 4Runner Limited adds 20-inch wheels, chrome exterior trim accents, and comes standard with the sunroof, and the TRD Pro has Fox dampers, TRD wheels, all-terrain tires, a TRD roof rack, and a front skid plate.
Engine (Power)
Every 4Runner gets power from a 4.0-liter V-6 gas engine that puts out 270 horsepower. It uses a five-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive with the option for four-wheel drive comes with the SRT, SR5 Premium Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, and Limited, while the rest of the lineup comes standard with four-wheel drive.
Performance
The 4Runner's body-on-frame construction and high ground clearance allow it to tackle all types of terrain, and its suspension does an excellent job of smoothing out rough and uneven roads. When equipped, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
Interior
There is room for five in the 4Runner's standard configuration, but the optional third row brings seating to seven. The large cargo area will accommodate up to 47.2 cubic feet of gear behind the second row and up to 89.7-cubic feet with both back rows folded down. A power-adjustable driver's seat comes standard along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Simulated leather upholstery comes in the SR5 Premium, which also has heated front seats and a power-adjustable passenger seat. The Limited adds genuine leather upholstery and ventilated front seats.
The technology in the 4Runner starts with an 8-inch touch screen, a 120-volt power outlet, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bump up to the Limited for a premium JBL stereo and integrated navigation.
Safety Features
Every 2022 4Runner comes with a long list of standard driver aids. In addition to the rearview camera, all trims now have adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with mitigation, automatic braking, and lane-departure warning. The SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro all come with a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-seat occupancy alert system is now available. It sends the driver a signal if it senses that there may be a child or pet left in the back seat.
