The Toyota Prius is not only fuel-efficient, but it is also safe and reliable. It has a roomy interior for a compact vehicle, and it comes with a host of infotainment and tech features. For the 2022 model year, a new Nightshade Special Edition model joins the lineup with a choice of three metallic colors, 17-inch wheels, and heated front seats. Here's a closer look at the latest Toyota Prius.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The L Eco starts the Prius lineup with 15-inch wheels and LED headlights. This base trim also has heated side exterior mirrors. Just a step up to the LE gets you a rear window wiper, and the XLE adds 17-inch wheels. The Nightshade Edition changes the look with black-painted wheels and black exterior trim elements, and a step up to the Limited gets you adaptive headlights. A sunroof is available with the Premium Convenience Package for the XLE and Limited.
Engine (Power)
Power for all Prius models comes from a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine and a single electric motor for front-wheel-drive models, and two electric motors for all-wheel drive models. The powertrain uses a CVT and generates 121 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive system for the Prius uses an electric motor that functions separately from the rest of the hybrid setup to power the rear wheels.
Performance
The 121-horsepower engine is plenty for powering the small Prius around town. The three driving modes allow the driver to make the most of road and weather conditions with EV, Eco, and Power to choose from. Eco provides the best fuel economy by balancing power with efficiency, but if you want better acceleration, select Power mode. There's also the EV mode for pure electric power. No matter which mode you choose, the responsive steering system and good suspension make the Prius easy to drive and handle.
Interior
A spacious cabin provides seating for five and makes the Prius comfortable for long rides, and it has a 27.4 cubic foot cargo area with the rear seats up. There are lots of soft-touch surfaces in the cabin, and features such as automatic climate control come standard. The XLE adds a heated steering wheel wrapped in SofTex faux leather, and it comes with a power-adjustable driver's seat and simulated leather upholstery.
The technology features in the Prius start with a 7-inch touch screen, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a six-speaker stereo, and Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto. A wireless charging pad comes in the XLE, and the Limited gets integrated navigation, an 11.6-inch touch screen, and a 10-speaker JBL stereo system.
Safety Features
Every 2022 Prius comes with a comprehensive list of standard safety features. It includes adaptive cruise control, road sign assist, lane departure warning, automatic high beam control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic detection. Every Prius also has forward collision warning with automatic braking. Just a step up to the LE adds an automated parallel parking system and front and rear parking sensors, and moving up to the Limited adds a head-up display. You can also add the Advanced Technology Package to the XLE to get the head-up display along with the adaptive headlights.
