Trim Levels (Exterior)
There are eight total trim levels available with the new 4Runner, though only seven of them are reasonably accessible to new buyers in most cases. At the base level, you'll find the SR5 trim, which boasts impressive 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, fog lights, and power heated side mirrors standard. Upgrade to the TRD Sport, and you'll get 20-inch alloy wheels and a special color-keyed hood scoop. The SR5 Premium trim features a power moonroof.
While the TRD Off-Road trim is mainly a performance upgrade, you'll still benefit from greater ground clearance and skid plate protection. The TRD Off-Road Premium includes a power moonroof along with several new camera angles for the bird's-eye-view monitor. The 40th Anniversary trim is a limited run of just 4,040 units, and it features bronze wheels and special body graphics. The most luxurious trim is the Limited, which has 20-inch wheels, a power moonroof, and a host of new performance enhancements. Finally, the TRD Pro boasts matte-black alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, a roof rack, and a special front grille.
Engine (Power)
Under the hood of the 4Runner, you'll find just a single engine no matter which trim level you opt for. It's a 4-liter V-6, and it's packed with power offering 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. This can be paired with either front-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive, or full-time four-wheel drive. Either way, the transmission is a five-speed automatic.
Performance
While their performance is always impressive, the off-road-capable 4Runners are especially useful when the road ends. Every 4Runner can handle some unfavorable conditions, especially if they're equipped with four-wheel drive, but the off-road models come with a multi-terrain select system that lets you change your drivetrain on the fly to adapt to different road conditions. Some of the more properly equipped off-road 4Runners can even climb rocks thanks to their high-end suspension and tires. Plus, the 4Runner has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.
Interior
Inside the 4Runner, you'll find everything you need for a fun adventure. If you're bringing cargo with you, 47.2 cubic feet of space is available behind the second-row seats. If that's not enough, you can fold down the second row to reveal 89.7 cubic feet of space. Given that the rear seats have a 40/20/40 split configuration, you can even mix and match for passengers and cargo alike. Plus, the infotainment system comes with an 8-inch touchscreen along with connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety Features
Quite a few driver assistance features are standard on the new 4Runner, such as forward collision warning and automated emergency braking. You can even enjoy lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control as standard equipment from the baseline model to the top-of-the-line TRD Pro.
