Completely redesigned for the 2023 model year, the Toyota Prius is one of the first hybrid vehicles to hit the market. A few of the updates found include an entirely reworked interior and exterior styling, additional driver-assistance safety features, and a refreshed infotainment system. This two-row hatchback, now in its fifth generation, is a smart choice if you're seeking a fuel-efficient and recently updated vehicle.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
When shopping for the 2023 Toyota Prius, you can choose among three trims: LE, XLE, and Limited. The hatchback comes standard with LED headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels, while the XLE and Limited trims include 19-inch alloy wheels. The XLE trim has an available panoramic glass room, and the top-of-the-line Limited trim also includes a powered liftgate. Also, in response to an increase in catalytic converter thefts, Toyota offers steel shields as a dealer-installed accessory.
Engine (Power)
The hybrid drivetrain on the 2023 Toyota Prius also receives an update. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine replaces the former 1.8-liter unit that produced 121 horsepower. Front-wheel-drive models receive this new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine along with an electric motor and combined they produce 194 horsepower. All-wheel-drive models use the same engine but two electric motors to get a combined 196 horsepower. Both options also get 139 pound-feet of torque. All Prius vehicles use a continuously variable automatic transmission.
Performance
Toyota listened to Prius owners when it came to the vehicle's power and helped the previously lackadaisical vehicle become quicker. Instead of going from zero to 60 mph in a lackluster 10.5 seconds, it can now reach that number in an impressive 7.1 seconds. It can also stop sooner than before, coming to a complete stop from 70 mph in 171 feet from 191. Steering is light and predictable, and you will appreciate the smooth ride quality. The vehicle's suspension system also received an overhaul, so you can easily maneuver it through busy city streets or cruise along the highway.
Interior
The vehicle has a surprising amount of cargo space with a maximum of 23.8 cubic feet found on the LE trim. Upper trims feature premium amenities such as heated and ventilated seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and a heated steering wheel. Another revamped aspect of the Prius involved the infotainment system. It's accessible via a standard 8-inch or optional 12.3-inch touchscreen display. Other standard features include six USB ports, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, satellite radio, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. You can also add wireless device charging and navigation.
Safety Features
Toyota made safety paramount with the 2023 Prius as all models come with more than a dozen standard driver-assistance features. Several of these key features are part of the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite and include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and forward-collision warning with automatic braking. Available add-on safety features include a surround-view parking camera system, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and reverse automatic emergency braking. The Limited trim also offers a digital rearview mirror function, which allows you to see out the rear window even when the cargo area is full.
