History of the Toyota Supra

A40

Tracing back the origins of the Supra leads us to the year 1978. From 1978 to 1981, the initial seeds of the Supra were planted in the form of the Toyota Celica Supra (A40). Although the exterior of the Toyota Celica Supra and the 2020 Supra are quite different, there are hints of inspiration scattered throughout the earlier version. From the Celica A40 model's Liftback to its hints of sporty styling, Annapolis and Glen Burnie drivers can look to the A40 as an initial inspiration for the Supra.

A60

1982 brings about the next stop along the Supra development timeline. The Celica A60 adds in flip-up head lights, a sportier body style, and increased performance options. The A60 arrived in an "L-Type" configuration and a performance inclined "P-Type" option. The then freshly designed A60 added in larger tries, fiberglass wheel-well flares, and an overall design that was lither than the 1978 A40 model.

A70

It wasn't until 1986 that the Supra split off from the Celica to established itself as a solo vehicle. Clearly sporting a heavy influence from its earlier Celica relatives, the Supra A70 put heavy importance on the performance side of things. The A70 added a turbocharged engine, electronically adjusted dampers, and power-enhancing variable air induction. Exterior design wise, the A70 added in hints of futuristic styling while maintaining a long sloping front end and an angular rear. Unlike the Celica, the Supra A70 was built for pure performance capability, and the design reflected that intent.

A80

Before taking a hiatus, the Supra appeared for a five-year stint (from 1993 to 1998) in the form of the Supra A80. Featuring similar styling to the latest 2020 Supra, the original A80 boasted a signature spoiler along with sleeker, rounded angles of styling. The 2020 Supra shares more DNA with the A80 Supra than likely any of the previous Supra models. The A80 was the most powerful iteration of the Supra, offering Glen Burnie drivers a 3.0-liter engine that's capable of going 0-60 in about 4.6 seconds. The A70 was able to go 0-60 in 6.4 seconds; the A60 could go 0-60 in 8.4 seconds; and the A40 can go 0-60 is 10.2 seconds. My, how far the Supra has come! The A80 has been out of production for about twenty years. However, the Supra is back in the form of the 2020 GR Supra!
