As one of the country’s oldest cities and loaded with old-world charm, Annapolis, MD is steeped in the past. With its Georgian architecture and brick streets, even a stroll through town feels like stepping back in time, but there are a wealth of opportunities to delve even deeper into its heritage. Here are our top picks of the best historical attractions in the area.

1. Annapolis Maritime Museum and Park

With its proximity to the beautiful Chesapeake Bay, it isn’t surprising that the ocean has played a huge part in the history of Annapolis. With informative exhibits about diverse topics, from the history of local crab and oyster industries to the Owens Yacht empire, there are plenty of opportunities here to explore the maritime history of the city.
It’s possible to book a tour of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse here, or you can sign up for a ride on the historic sailjack Wilma Lee. There are displays of beautiful maritime photography and plenty of chances to interact with the digital games, holograms, and virtual-reality exhibits.

2. Maryland State House

With its stately architecture and majestic dome, the very structure of the Maryland State Capitol reflects its historical significance as the oldest state house still in use. Built in 1779 and used as the American Capitol from 1783-4, it has witnessed some of the most significant events in the country’s history, including George Washington’s resignation as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army.

Inside, visitors can view both chambers and a range of historical displays and artifacts, along with statues of Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas. You’ll also get the chance to admire the awe-inspiring building and grounds, and to take advantage of some great photo opportunities!

3. Annapolis Naval Academy

The US Navy and Marine Corps have been training at Annapolis since 1845, and have gathered a rich collection of artifacts and historical evidence to record it. Two floors of exhibits cover the history of the US Navy, with video and audio exhibits, and guided tours that bring the experiences of naval men and women to life. You can also see an incredible collection of model ships, some of which date back to the 1700s.
Visitors can admire the breathtaking architecture and might get the chance to watch the naval student marching band or to experience the frequent events and air shows.

4. Historic London Town and Gardens

Founded as Anne Arundel County’s seat in 1683, the site has been painstakingly reconstructed to reflect London Town in its eighteenth-century heyday, and to give visitors the authentic flavor of the bygone colonial era. A tobacco barn, carpenter’s shop, and the Lord Mayor’s Tenement have all been built around the centerpiece of the original historic structure of William Brown’s House.

With regular events, costumed volunteers, and beautiful grounds to tour and admire, this is a wonderful destination if you’re looking for an excuse to take your Toyota Corolla for a spin.
